Philanthropy

The Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at Southern Methodist University was founded in 1929. Since then, we have made it a priority to give back to our community. As a college chapter, we try to find fun and innovative ways to raise money for our national philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

The CASA volunteers are advocates for the abused and neglected children going through the court system. There are over 77,000 special advocates for the children, which is impressive, but sadly, not nearly enough. Most of the time the child's advocate is the only constant mentor in their lives. One has to be 21 years old to become a CASA volunteer advocate. Because many of our members do not reach this age limit, we serve CASA not as volunteer advocates but by raising money through fun philanthropic events. These events reach out to both the students of Southern Methodist University and the surrounding community.

Our two biggest events are Theta Food Friday and Theta 5k. Theta Food Friday, a biannual event, invites the students of SMU to the Theta porch for an unlimited buffet of Dallas’ amazing fast-food. Each person is charged $10 admission and all proceeds go directly to CASA. Recently, Theta Food Friday has been voted the #1 Sorority Event on campus. The last Theta Food Friday was held in March 2018. We raised $2,987 for CASA! Our next Theta Food Friday is quickly approaching in October 2018 and we are so excited!

Another large event, Theta 5k, is held every fall semester on campus. This past fall of 2017, people from all over the SMU and Dallas community came out to support the cause and helped us raise over $48,000! It was truly incredible to witness all of the support we received for such an incredible cause. Participants pay $25 to register for the Theta 5K, receiving a complementary Theta 5K t-shirt and the chance to participate in a raffle sponosred by local businesses. All proceeds go to Dallas CASA. Although we cannot be directly involved with those who benefit from CASA, we, as a chapter, try to do as much as we can for CASA and the children by raising money from these enjoyable events. We hope to help CASA reach every child. The next Theta 5K will  be held on Sunday, September 30th.
